Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small cabbage, shredded
  • 1 1/4 cups cooked rice
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes with juice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • salt, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • large skillet
  • wooden spoon
  • chef's knife
  • aluminum foil

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until browned, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks.
  3. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in the shredded cabbage, diced tomatoes with their juice, cooked rice, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and garlic powder.
  5. Season with salt and black pepper, then simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage begins to soften.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.
  7. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30–35 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded.
  8. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Brown the ground beef well before adding the remaining ingredients for the richest flavor. Use fully cooked rice, not raw rice, and simmer the mixture for 5 minutes before baking to help soften the cabbage and develop the flavors. Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before serving for the best texture.
