Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and lightly caramelized.Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the filling cool for about 5 minutes before assembling the rolls.
- On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out the thawed puff pastry to smooth any seams. Spread the cooled apple filling evenly over the pastry, leaving about a 1/2-inch border along one edge.Distribute the apples evenly rather than piling them in one area to make rolling easier and ensure balanced filling in each piece.
- Starting from the edge opposite the border, roll the pastry tightly into a log. Seal the edge with a little water to help keep the roll closed.Cut the log into 6–8 equal rolls and place them cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet. Leave a little space between the rolls so the pastry has room to puff as it bakes.
- Beat the egg in a small bowl and brush it over the tops of the rolls. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed, golden, and flaky.Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with caramel sauce if desired. They are especially delicious while still warm.
Notes
Use one sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed according to the package directions. Cook the apple filling until tender and lightly caramelized, then cool for about 5 minutes before assembling. Avoid excess moisture in the filling to prevent soggy pastry. Roll tightly, cut into 6–8 equal rolls, and bake until puffed, golden, and flaky. Powdered sugar and caramel sauce are optional serving additions.
